What the heck is a story coach, anyway?

"What's my core message, and who needs to hear it?"

Why is that question SO HARD to answer?

Oh, you thought it was just you? Well, surprise! We all struggle to articulate our main message, identify the ideal audience to receive it, and communicate it in a way that will capture their attention, engage their emotions, ignite their imagination, and inspire them to action. And there's a very good reason for that.

Imagine, for a moment, that you are the old woman who lives in a shoe. Your bed is the sole, your windows the eyelets where shoelaces should go, and above you is an open-air skylight.

If someone asked you to describe your home, you might say "Well, it's very cozy. Has a nice leathery smell to it. The kitchen's a bit cramped, but you get used to it."

What you wouldn't think to say is the most obvious observation from the outside: "I live in a shoe."

Why? Because that's not how it looks and feels, from your perspective. The shoe-ness of your home can only be observed from the outside.

And so it is with your core message.

When it comes to telling our stories--be it in the form of an elevator pitch, a memoir, a rousing speech, a funny anecdote, a bio, or even an about page--sharing our lived experience is only the first step. To offer a clear understanding of who we are and what we stand for, we must describe the view from above, as well as the view from within.

But how? How can we fly up to 14,000 feet to take in the shape of the forest, when we are the trees?

We can't.

We all need an outside perspective to help us clarify our core message. Even I, despite my PhD, my decades of experience in story coaching and branding, and my long list of successful clients and loyal fans, struggle to apply my gift to my own brand. Because the truth is, we cannot see our core message from the inside. I can't, you can't, no one can.

In fact, there is one thing every successful person on Earth has in common: they didn't get to where they are alone.

That's where coaches and consultants come in. They do for us what we simply can't do for ourselves.

I am a story coach: I listen to your stories, find the core message within them, sum it up, and present it to you in clear, concise language.

Then I help you:

  • identify the ideal audience for your message

  • strategize the best way for them to absorb it

  • keep you, and all your messaging, focused on what matters most

In buzzier words: I help you discover, and deliver, your authentic brand voice.

But enough about me. Let's talk about you, and how I can help you clarify YOUR core message, and deliver it to those who most need to hear it!
